You can't use Whatsapp on a stock iPad. Your device has to be jailbroken to be able to use it. It's an iPhone app.

Which version is your software? Look in Settings - General - About - Version.

There are some great guides and tutorials in the Hacking section of our forum including this one http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-hacking/24377-jailbreaking-methods-ipad.html however, I would a) read a few of the general guides in the Hacking section before Jailbreaking for the first time and b) check that your version of iOS is jailbreakable (the link that I have given you will tell you which version can and which can't be jailbroken).
