It sounds as if the screen connector isn't making proper contact. Is your iPad still under warranty? You should make a Genius Bar appointment at an Apple store. If it's defective and under warranty, it'll be exchanged for a refurbished one. Make sure to do a backup before taking it in, as you won't get your original iPad back.
