No need for any special apps to manage your battery. I recommend following the battery guide in the iPad manual. Apple has done a lot of work to get the most from their batteries, and it works pretty good. After over two years of use, my iPad original is still good for ten hours. I only rarely drained the battery, and did not leave it on the charger for long periods after it was charged.
