After successfully jailbreaking my iPad I also went to work on my better half's iPhone... A friend of mine told me about an app that would turn an iPhone into a wifi hotspot so that we could go online with our iPads if there was no wireless network around. He did not know the name of the app, though.

    Anyone?

Any advantage of one vs. the other?

You can actually try mywi for like 3 days or something to see how it will work.

mywi just works, but people say they get a text(warning) from their provider, that they're using illegal services(or some sort), and to stop or.....

pdanet supposedly blocks your service provider from knowing what you're doing, they don't like that, they want you to pay.
