Hello all!

As a bit of an intro, I run a micro-ISV that specialises in mapping software - especially for Microsoft MapPoint.
I also run the GeoWebGuru website, and run the technical side of the Eco Map Costa Rica project - a Univ. of Dallas project that takes students to study a rainforest restoration project.

My iPad is a 64GB 3G which I received as a birthday gift, and I've had my dirty paws on it for a few days now. My intention is to mainly use it as an ebook-reader, movie viewer, etc. So far it has been working well for those applications, although (as reported elsewhere), the Wifi is buggy.

Of course I'm also interested in geospatial applications - where I think it could be very useful. So far, the available apps are a bit limited (unless you know otherwise?). The standard Google Maps app works pretty well but doesn't offer much beyond routing.
I've tried "MapTap" which brings OpenStreetMaps data to the table, but does nothing other than show your current location.
Actually the best map app I've tried so far is Wunderground's Wundermap (but then I'm a stats junkie).

What would be really useful for this year's EcoMapCostaRica trip, would be a map routing application (and track recorder) that used locally stored map data (ie. did not rely on 3G). This is for navigation later in the year! (for surveying, we use a Trimble field computer).
(so far, the iPad is replacing all the books I usually take - novels and programming refs)

Back to GeoWebGuru: I intend to publish some articles about the iPad and possible applications. Perhaps coding as well. So I'd be interested if anyone has some geospatial iPad experience that they'd like to share. Eg. Apps that they recommend, doing something interesting, etc. PM/Email me and we can discuss articles that could be suitable.

Finally, I am looking at the possibility of writing my own apps for the iPad. Webapps are an initial option. True native apps are under consideration, but would be more problematic due to the closed policies of Apple.

Welcome, glad you joined us!

iPad has only been out six weeks, give it some time and there will be "an app for that" ;)

Yes I know some people have complained about the lack of apps, but all things considered, it is not bad at all.

Perhaps I should write just such an app - only thing is time, learning Ojective-C/Cocoa, and requiring a Mac (all PCs here).

One map and routing app on the iPad that might be useful to you is the Badger Map. Its a native iPad app that it integrated with the calendar and Google Maps. It seems that the specific use case is for Sales people to manage their territories, so I'm not sure if it will be the type of routing that would be useful for your Costa Rica Rainforest Project ... it needs addresses to build the routes on.

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

Thank you for taking the time to help this member but as this is a very old thread and the OP has not been back in quite a while, I'm afraid he will probably not see it. But thank you all the same, we very much appreciate others who do try to help.
