Hi Everybody!

I'm an iPad noob. Was given an iPad 1 32gb WiFi/3G stock recently as a gift. My first Apple experience.

My problem;
iPad was on 4.2, attempted to update to 4.3.1. on iTunes. Didn't work.

Updated iTunes, which now crashes, reporting missing .dll files from iTunes.exe. Have deleted & re-installed iTunes 3 times with same problem reoccurring.

iPad will not restore. Now not working at all, just shows iTunes & USB screen. I followed all the instructions on the Apple help site with no joy.

Help! What can I do?

Cheers, Mike

Good to hear from you. You’ll find a whole bunch of iPad enthusiasts in this Forum who are only too willing to help other iPad owners and to hear of their experiences. Don’t be afraid to post any questions you may have or use the ‘Search’ button near the top of the Forum web page. I usually find I discover one new interesting and useful piece of information about my iPad every day - and often not even what I was looking for!!

OK - switch the iPad off - then hold down the Power and Home buttons for 60 - yes sixty! - seconds until the white Apple logo appears. The iPad will then reboot. No apps or user data will be lost. The reboot takes a while, so have patience..let us know how you get on.

Hope to hear from you soon with your thoughts about the iPad.

Have fun and enjoy your iPad

If you don’t already have it you can download a copy of the iPad manual for free.

It’s free too.

Thanks Tim for your prompt response!

Followed your instructions with no result, the iPad goes to the little white apple, then returns to the USB/iTunes screen. Tried it 3 times same result.

I have the manual and have actually read it ;-)

OK - but the white Apple is the correct outcome and now you need to do an initial sync with iTunes. There's absolutely no way around this. So the problem is not with the iPad, but with iTunes on your PC. So that's the area to focus on - getting a working copy of iTunes 10.2.1 on your PC. If you have a local Apple Store, they can do this initial setup for you. But it would be best to sort your PC out and get iTunes working on that.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

I have spent quite some time in Beijing and Shanghai - a lovely country and amazing economic progress. It just blows you away...

Hi Tim,
Thanks for all your input. Problem now fixed after taking it down to the Apple Store.

Also installed a new iTunes on a different drive, which has also helped get everything back to normal.

Lessons learned; Don't be quick to download updates & that Apple is as bad as Microsoft.

Well before we go stooping that low, what did the apple store do to fix your problem? Was it a hardware issue? Did the update brick your iPad somehow?

Also, if your PC broke, there ain't no Microsoft store you can take your PC to get fixed for free.
