If you like watching blockbuster movies on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch then you’re in for a treat as Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has today announced the forthcoming release of “AVATAR iTunes Extras Special Edition†on Tuesday, December 20. Available to pre-order at www.iTunes.com/Avatar from today, the special edition will cost $19.99 for the HD version and $14.99 for the SD version. According to Fox, this special version of the film will enable fans to deconstruct some of its most memorable scenes, with the aim of revealing how James Cameron applied special effects to create the awe-inspiring world of Pandora.

Fans will get to experience the global box office sensation like never before as they get to control scene deconstructions in simultaneous views, as well as getting the chance to interact with the performance capture and visual effects levels in 17 of the film’s scenes. For the first time ever, Green Screen X-ray gives users an interactive look through the visual effects levels to see the original green screen footage behind a pivotal scene.

“Digital platforms like iTunes usher in new ways to interact with and watch movies like AVATAR,†said Aubrey Freeborn, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Product Management for Worldwide VOD and Electronic Sell-Through, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. “These new interactive features enhance the experience and encourage digital ownership.â€

James Cameron fans will also be glad to hear that the special iTunes edition of the film features an original screenplay by James Cameron, as well as his scriptment (a novella with some scenes broken out into dialogue), a gallery of 1,700 images, and much more besides.

AVATAR is the highest-grossing film of all time, generating almost $2.8 billion in worldwide box office.

UPDATE!: It turns out that unfortunately this version of AVATAR is not available for iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, but only for PC or Mac. Sorry!
