Is Gorrilla glass really that strong? I saw some vid's where people were dropping coins, drill, nuts and bolts on the glass and nothing happened. Is is really that strong? Why wouldn't Apple go with it other than maybe it heavy.

I was researching and found this they all use that glass
Samsung: Behold II, Captivate, Continuum, Corby S3650, Corby W900, Epic 4G, Fascinate, Flight II, Focus, Galaxy A, Galaxy Ace, Galaxy S, GALAXY S II, Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy Tab, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Lindy, Mesmerize, Monte, Monte Preston, Omnia HD, S8500 WAVE, Showcase, Trance, Transform, Ultra TOUCH S8300, Vibrant, Wave II

Apple parts suppliers are under a strict NDA so you won't find the answer one way or the other.

Here's an interesting article about iPad glass however...

AnandTech - The Apple iPad 2 Review

The article claims that both the iPad and iPad 2 use Corning Gorilla Glass, however again, unless you work for Apple it's close to impossible to confirm.

I would think the iPad has gorilla glass - I don't use screen protectors and always take my iPad out with me and there are mo scratches on the screen!

I've had the exact same experience with my original iPad (owned since the day they came out). No screen protection and not a scratch. That's not to say it won't scratch, but in general day-to-day use it's really quite resistant to them.

My first ipad screen fractured just like Corning glass does if the crystal structure is touched in just the right way (think safety glass getting hit with a rock just right) but my second has been bomb proof

As others have said, rumors persist that Apple uses Corning Gorilla Glass. No way to be sure since (as also already pointed out) Apple doesn't want anyone to believe that they don't manufacture every component of their products.

To answer your other questions, no, it isn't heavy. And yes, it is that strong. It can be shattered (again as already noted) but that's very unlikely. And it's almost impossible to scratch it. Try your car keys on your screen if you doubt that.

And apart from their value in reducing glare, I'm another person who thinks screen protectors on the iPad are a waste of money.

I think I will give this a try! But Best Buy may not be very happy.

Actually that's a little confusing. Apple doesn't manufacture components, they design them. It's common knowledge that their products and the components making up those products are manufactured by third parties.

If they use Corning Gorilla Glass for example, it's designed and manufactured to Apple's specifications.

The key is that the components they use are generally exclusive to Apple and often the manufacturing processes are kept secret to afford Apple a competitive advantage.

    Just a little clarification. :)

All of this talk reminded me of a great little commercial (that Apple eventually asked the sponsor to pull...which they did). It lives on here...
