Expect ALL schoolchildren to be using iPads in the near future

I can see this in about 3-5 yrs, if not for high school kids, then for college students. As for price, I paid 250.00 for a basic DVD player 8yrs ago. Now you can pick one up for about 30.00 bucks. Just give it time and the price will come down.

Cumberland College, a private school here in Nashville, gives you an iPad when you start. I'm sure the price is included in the tuition charges, but the technology is used from day 1.

Also, my doctoral program is paperless. Yes, textbooks are still used, but all assignments, exams, syllabi, and messages between teachers and students are handled electronically. All research is done at home on-line . . . no late nights at the library. Most periodicals provide .pdf downloads of all articles.

I'm not sure I follow either. My kids like Sweet Poison is already using the Internet for school research. I want our kids to have the best education possible and tools to achieve this goal.

Your suggesting the Internet is a bad source of information? Just wondering, since I research science nearly exclusively on the Internet since nearly all scientific communities have most of their publications on line. I am a member of the Geologic Society of America, and have accessed hundreds of papers off the Internet. Any other sourcing would be a waste of time. JDFlood

I'm with everyone else. I use the Internet all the time. Research papers and even just quick google searches for something I may have missed in class and with hour and a half classes, I tend to tune out a lot. (I need to fix that, I have 3 more years of high school to go) The Internet can be scary knowing your 8 year old kid has full access, and the Internet can have a lot of "junk" on that kids even my age should see. Maybe a parental filter would ease your nerves?

Contentious though, I agree... And clearly not including doctoral or specialised research using specific associations or similar... But...

My personal view is that Internet is not a fully reliable source for high school or below... It's all mediated info and there is a strong risk other people opinions or interpretations are taken as the academic truth. If a phd student has the means to filter sources, a middle school kid might end up taking Wikipedia for granted.... And if that's the case I'm very much of the view that going back to the source and spending a good afternoon in the library with encyclopaedia and proper text books is a better experience

I appreciate your view and when my students research scientific information, I encourage them to check out more than one site and especially not Wikipedia because as you say it can be misleading. I'm assuming students, intelligent students, will be more inquisitive than your average user of wiki.

On the other hand all of life is like this. Fox news is a propaganda channel not news, most commercials contain logical fallacies, you can't believe politicians. Where can you find unbiased info? Text books that leave out evolution. It is another learning ground to be a discriminating consumer of information. When I was in junior high, we took time on being a recriminating user of info. We would scan tv commercials for logical fallacies ( 52% better milage... Than what?)' bring in three newspaper clippings on the same subject and compare. so, it's a great training ground, at any age, in my opinion. I think you have to just pose the question, does that make sense? What is the other side. JD
