Email address lists gone

All of a sudden my iPad email no longer recognizes the common email addresses but comes up with email addresses of people I have never emailed. Is there a place where they are kept that I can edit?

A couple of questions.

What version of iOS are you on? Have you recently updated to iOS5?

Have you synchronised or backed up your iPad recently?

And, I guess, iPad1 or iPad2?

The iPad will also suggest emails from your Contacts app if it thinks they match. Have you added extra contacts or synced with a new online contact database recently?

my contact list just disappeared!
the new empty list is in a book form rather than the APP format.
Please don't talk about "sync" -- i hate that word. Talk about Backup and Restore...
and how to bring back my list.

I have NOT linked my ipad2 with iCloud yet, so
where did my list go?
