I am running out of ideas...

OK - so we've got SSL, you've got the server address at smtp.me.com, you've got your account name and password entered correctly, you've got authentication set to 'password'. You've not changed or re-entered the password recently, by any chance? You need to remember that the iPad, by default, sets the first letter of the first word of what it perceives to be a new sentence to upper case and, if your password has the first letter lower case, it can be easy to accidentally set it to upper case. So, if you've recently re-entered the password for whatever reason, it might be worth checking that it didn't accidentally get entered as upper case.

OK - a workaround at this stage is to set up a gmail account. You can do this in literally minutes and it's free....at least you'd be able to use email and you can forward any gmail to your regular account.
