Well, that's true, if it wasn't the iPad it would be something else!!! I used to sit at my computer years ago and send email and such. Naps takes me away from my chores, occasionally, the telephone. Lol.

Have kids. They are great mirrors of what we do. How did I know when my device became a negative? When I watched my kids on their devices and act like me, oblivious to the world and short with people who intrude. We have set rules about when devices can be used and where. No bathroom. No kitchen table. If we go somewhere, they devices get put in my bag when we get there(car travel is okay). Homework(or chores) get done FIRST before devices get turned on. And once it is plugged in for the night(at bedtime), it is off limits until the next day. No, you can't just check FB one more time! No, emails can wait until morning.
Often when we go out to eat, we are literally the only family talking to each other while we wait for food to come. Every other table is full of people on mobile devices! Sad, me thinks. Or at a stop light, I look over and one guy next to me is on his phone talking and on the other side of me, a teen driver is texting.
I think we as a society need to learn rules for our new world. Easy access is too easy to use at not smart times.

iPad is like anything else I could be doing -- reading a book, watching a movie, napping, etc. -- all more fun than chores. But I'd be on a computer no matter what. I just used to use my laptop and netbooks more.

Good for you!!!! Remember you are giving them a precious and expensive PRIVILEGE!!! This is not a birthright, kiddos, sorry. And plus, this stuff costs $$$ they shouldn't just be given the latest iPhone (even if you have the means) - IMHO. And you know what, you are the adult with a job, if you want to spend $$$ on yourself on iPads, iPhones or whatever you are entitled to do so. I know you are a good parent to your children. ;)

I don't have children and I can't wrap my head around children with all of this grown up access and then the parent scream bloody murder when something terrible happens with the device - sexting, meeting pedophiles online, bullying, etc. I had one FB say my kids are texting me in school how is this allowed in school or what is the teacher doing over there something to that effect. Huh, I said, well, the parents give them the tools to test in school. But you can't say too much as you will get in trouble with parent.

I will stick with my four legged child, he only likes to use my iPad on my lap as a bridge to his window perch lol. He writes an occasional garbled text on it with his grubby little paws and I just send it saying Love, Miles. Lol.
