Maybe..., Open Office (OpenOffice.org). Best thing out there. It is what Microsoft stole and used to create its pricey bundle. Open Office is free, has Word Processing, Spread sheets, Data sorting and TONS of free templates. Works on desktop computers and I have heard there is a way to use it on iPad, although I have not tried to use it on one. It is open source and has excellent information on its message boards/website.

I love OpenOffice and really wish they'd come up with an iPad app.

If you have a solid/fast internet connection you can use the OnLive or CloudOn virtual desktop apps. They both have the main MS Office suite apps, and DropBox so that you can get your documents on/off their site.

Both offer free basic accounts. That should be enough for your thesis.

Otherwise, I have not heard of a both decent and free word processing app for the iPad. One may exist, but it hasn't crossed my radar.

Probably worth splashing out and getting something like QuickOffice HD. Don't let your thesis get messed up by a cheap and nasty app

Smart Office 2 is currently on sale for $.99 (usually a $10 app). It seems like it would be a good alternative but I haven't used it much since I just downloaded it myself.
