The Denver Post reports today that the Denver Broncos have decided to switch in iPads as a replacement for the 500-page playbooks that they have, up until now, been printing out on a weekly basis for all of their 120 players, coaches, scouts and other staff. Each iPad will contain the week’s game plan, scouting reports, video clips and lots of other relevant facts and figures for the playing and coaching staff. The Post says that aside from being great for the environment and saving lots of paper, not to mention saving the cost of printing so much material every week, using iPad might even help the Broncos in their performance on the field, as apparently the only other teams in the NFL to use iPads instead of the traditional paper playbooks are the Baltimore Ravens and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to the report, whenever Broncos coach John Fox wants to add a new play, it will be automatically pushed to the playbook app on each of the iPads. Unfortunately we won’t be seeing iPads appearing on the sidelines at NFL matches anytime soon, as they are currently banned from the side of the pitch, although they have now been allowed into the locker room right up until kickoff, whereas previously they had to be removed 90 minutes before kickoff. It is possible that iPads will be allowed on the sidelines in future, however.

I applaud the Broncos, Ravens, and Buccaneers on moving over to iPads. I hope to see them on the sidelines real soon.

The NFL is not likely to allow them on the sidelines any time soon since they are significantly more powerful than a playbook. They don't allow laptops either.
