First of all congratulations on the birth of your son, I can imagine the scene you describe. You need to make an appointment with the Genius Bar at your nearest Apple Store, it doesn't matter that it was purchased in the US. Explain to them what has happened, be honest, be distraught which you are. Apple were replacing iPads as a one time courtesy, it seems to have dropped off considerably but we still hear of people being very lucky.
