It didn't happen automatically on my iPad. I had to go into SETTINGS > General > Software Update.

What error message are you getting? If you lose your wifi at any point during the download, the download will fail and you will have to start again.

I am getting the same error "unable to download". At the same point in the process every time.
All appears to be going well then it bombs out.

I have problem too

I have tried three times to download IOS6 to my iPad 3. Each time it goes through most of the process and before the end the error message reads "there was a problem downloading ios6"

Do yourselves a favor, and plug into iTunes. OTA might be fine for patches, but a major upgrade like 6 is going to download the whole OS. Do it wired, and you'll get far fewer headaches.
