We have both where I work.

We haven't really tested them for download speed, but Verizon will always give better coverage/reception etc. than ATT.

Anybody who has had both an ATT and a Verizon version of the iPhone can readily verify that.

Another issue to consider is whether you're ever going to use the iPad in another country. More-or-less Verizon, who use CDMA technology, only works in the US and in a very limited number of other countries. AT&T use GSM, which works everywhere except Japan.

We have been with VZ since Feb and I must admit that the service is great and the speed is good. We live in a large area and I heard horror stories of AT&T service and lack of the customer care.

There was a recent test done in major cities and overall, AT&T beats the pants off Verizon.
    Google for it.
Will see if I can find it.

I thought Consumer Reports had exactly the opposite test results? Will dig up the latest test issue. OP, you know that whichever one you choose will result in a system blackout for a 500 mile radius, right? ;)

Did you really just post an article written in Feb. 2010? Are those tests even remotely relevant well over a year later?

Verizon has a superior voice network and ATT has a superior data network. Since the iPad isn't a phone there is only one choice. There is a reason that the Verizon 3G versions of the iPad2 are more readily available at apple stores.

Our local apple store told me recently they have yet to see ANY Verizon ipad2 models although they have had ATT models right along although never more than one or two at a time.

I do recall seeing a report that AT&T's data rates were higher than VZW's. Of course, AT&T has notoriously low customer satisfaction, so I don't know how everything trades off.

Obviously, if you're going out of the US, you want AT&T.

Also, VZW's CDMA net won't let you do voice and data at the same time.

"Also, VZW's CDMA net won't let you do voice and data at the same time." that i know, but since the ipad dont do voice, its not a problem.

I have been with AT$T for year and half, service here sucks, but then I have heard people say that Verizon doesnt work in some places, you will always have people on both sides wanting to kill one another for bad mouthing either carrier. But I would agree, if you are going to use it in another country, AT$T would be a better choice, if not, probably Verizion.

I've been happy with my AT&T 3G on iPad on both coasts for more than a year. The data service seems much better than the phone service. I have an AT&T iPhone 4 and that service often sucks in the same places where my iPad data is working well. I need the AT&T phone because I use it heavily overseas, too.

The one time I found iPad 2s in stock at an Apple store, they only had Verizon's. They didn't move as quickly, I was told, but that might depend on local data quality and on whether people are buying to resell overseas.

I switch my AT&T chip between my iPad 1 and 2 and have good service. I also used my iPad 1 overseas without problem with a local SIM card and switched back to the AT&T card without problem after months.
