How do you check if there are any apps running in the background? Or is it the case that once you close an app and open another, the old app remains closed?

I have an ipad3 which is not jail broken.
Thanks

The only apps that would continue to run in the background are apps that utilize the GPS (indicated by the location/GPS logo in the notification bar) or audio apps that are currently playing (indicated by the Play logo in the notification bar).

If you double click the home button, you will bring up the multitask bar, which will display recently used apps, which have been "frozen" in memory ready for you to jump back in where you left off. They are not actually running (unless they are one of the above mentioned apps), just taking up some room in memory.

To clear these apps from the multitask bar, hold the icon until it wiggles then hit the red minus button.

There is an app called ACT monitor that I picked up a few weeks ago for free but currently costs.99 cents. The app shows all apps running in the background and how much memory is left with all your apps open. It also shows battery life and how much time you have left on the battery for reading, music, and video. Not sure I'd pay for it but I have found it useful. It has mostly 5 star reviews, and lots of them.

Hi Happytravels - in addition to the excellent advice already given, multi-finger gesturing can be used by swiping right or left, apps in the 'background' will reappear (kind of like having multiple programs opened on a standard computer); also, swiping up w/ 4-5 fingers on the screen will open the multi-task bar - :)
