Apple announced several other new products yesterday at the iPhone launch event at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park in Cupertino, including the much-rumoured Apple Watch Series 3.

Just as has been reported over the past few weeks, the latest edition to the Apple Watch line-up has built-in cellular functionality and GPS, or you can also choose a version with just GPS and no cellular functionality. Both of the new models boast a 70% faster dual-core processor and new wireless chip.
“
We believe the addition of cellular will transform the way people use Apple Watch, providing a new sense of freedom since they can stay connected with or without their iPhone,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “Apple Watch Series 3 combined with the power of watchOS 4 is the ultimate device for a healthy life.”

Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) features a full LTE and UMTS cellular radio that can switch immediately from cellular when separate from your iPhone, but still has the same number as your iPhone so that you don’t need to give your friends, family, or work a second phone number. Apple gave a great demonstration from the stage yesterday of a crystal clear phone call to an Apple employee on a paddle-board in the middle of a lake via her Apple Watch. Very impressive stuff!

Apple also showed how it has managed to solve the problem of where to put the cellular antenna in such a small device by creating an industry-first antenna that uses the display as both a transmitting and receiving element for LTE and UMTS. And to get around the lack of room inside the watch casing for even a Micro SIM, Apple created a built-in eSIM that is more than 100th the size of a traditional SIM card.

Health remains a very important focus of the Apple Watch for Apple, and the new watchOS 4 features an updated Heart Rate app that will provide much more complex heart rate insights, including measurements during resting, workout, recovery, walking, and Breathe sessions. And in a move that could save many lives, watchOS 4 now includes an alert system that will notify a user when their heart rate rises above a particular threshold when the user is inactive.

Other features include the Siri watch face that shows your important information throughout the day, an improved Workout app, custom High Intensity Interval Training and pool swim auto sets. Also new is GymKit, where you can connect to your gym cardio equipment and have two-way synchronization of data.

Apple also made a lot of the redesigned Apple Watch Music app, where you can now automatically sync playlists such as New Music Mix and Favourites Mix, as well as being able to stream directly from Apple Music with the GPS + Cellular model.

The Apple Watch line up now comprises Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) starting at $399, and the GPS-only version starting at $329. The Series 1 Apple Watch is also still available with a new low starting price of $249.

Both cellular and non-cellular versions of Apple Watch Series 3 are available to pre-order from Friday, September 15, with availability from Friday, September 22, although the non-cellular version is initially available in more countries than the cellular one.
