Apple email program

When you open your email program and select a email to read from your inbox how do you get rid of the window/box on the left side of the screen so that the email that your reading takes up 100% of the screen.

In landscape view? I'm not able to make this happen in landscape, and in portrait the email list goes away as soon as you select one.
