When Apple launched the iPad Air and the Retina display iPad Mini, it was surprising to see the Cupertino giant discontinue the iPad 4 and choose to maintain sales of the already 2-year old iPad 2. Of course, it made sense for Apple, since it was much cheaper to make an iPad 2, thus having bigger profit margins, and plus, there was still demand, coming from schools and enterprise users. But this demand has now apparently decreased nd Apple has finally replaced the second-generation iPad 2 with the newer iPad 4.

Thus, the single non-Retina display iPad currently in Apple’s offer remains the original iPad Mini. The iPad 4 will be available only in the 16GB storage capacity and will cost $399 for the WiFi only version and $529 for the WiFi + Cellular one. Also, now all of Apple’s iPad devices are on the new Lightning connector, since the iPad 2 was the last one to use the 30-pin adaptor.

The fourth-generation iPad with Retina display can be acquired from Apple’s online store in Black or White colors. Nothing has changed with the iPad 4, as it comes with the same tech specs that it had at the launch. Apple’s move is apparently part of a bigger strategy to come up with products that would appeal to budget-conscious users and those from emerging markets. Also today, Apple has released a new version of the iPhone 5c, a cheaper 8GB model.

They should have done this right when the Air was released. Think of those poor souls and school systems that did buy a bunch of second gen units. Pretty lame of apple to string this out as long as they did. Bleh.

ipad 2 is still a useful device. I was using it for loads of things until I upgraded to iPad mini 2 last November.

Now that it's being discontinued, I'm glad that I traded it in when I did.

16 GB of memory won't do squat imo. I needed 32 GB and I just have documens and apps on my device.

I want to get rid of my IPAD 2. Nothing but trouble since day one. The king of crashes.

Does this mean that Apple will not support the iPad2 any more.
No, it means that it will no longer be available new from Apple. It is possible, though, that the iPad 2 will not receive iOS updates after the release of iOS 8 later this year. It should be usable for several more years with increasing allowances made for it's limited RAM and processing power.
