My sister is getting an iPad2 and giving me her current iPad. She is conserned about "data" she entered before I wipe clean the first iPad. For example, she has made a lot of entries into the "MyJournal" app. Are these entries "backed up" to her account and will be automatically downloaded when she syncs her new Ipad2 to her existing account? Or, do they need to be copied off the current iPad somehow? Thanks (I am a new member of the forum)

The data files are backed up during the iTunes backup when syncing to your computer and should be transfered to the iPad 2 when it is initially synced.

Personally, I never trust anything. Set up the iPad 2 first, verify the data, and if anything is missing, she can always copy and paste it into an email to send to herself.

One of our most experienced members, twerppoet, suggested this procedure to transfer everything....

"In iTunes, with your iPad connected, choose you iPad under devices.

Right click on the iPad and do a Backup.

Right click on the iPad and choose Transfer Purchases.

Explore iTunes on the computer and make sure all your media and apps are there.

That will do most of what you need. To be on the safe side, go through any of your apps that store or create documents and make sure you email, or otherwise save them to the computer. Be sure to include the Saved Pictures album in iPhotos.

When you get your new iPad sync it to same account and computer. Right click on the device and choose Restore from Backup. I'm not completely sure of the right sequence in the restore procedure, so you might want to grab the iPad User's Guide. But as long as you did the first part with the old iPad you should bje able to fumble you're way to a complete recovery of all your stuff.

Before you send back your iPad, be sure to Restore it from the main device screen. This will remove all your personal data and set it to the same state you received it in."

Just got my iPad 2, so I did this for real. Like I said before, make sure you've got a good backup and have transferred all your purchases to iTunes.

Turnes out that when you connect your new iPad, once it's registered, you will be offered the chance to restore it from a Backup. Just choose your old iPad from the list. Worked great for me.

You'll need to sync your other stuff after that backup. That is why it is important to make sure all your apps, music, and movies make it into iTunes. Once the apps are synced, the data in the apps shows up too. Strange way of doing things, but it worked.

The only thing that did not transfer were the account passwords. I had to go back into each mail account and reenter my password.

Like Snoitan said, just make sure you new iPad is the way you want it before restoring the old one. That way you can always try, try, again.

Nothing much to say that everyone else hasn't already.

Not that that will probably stop me. :)

It's just a 16GB iPad 2. If it has light leaks I haven't noticed it yet. Sale of the Droid X paid for about half of it. Went into Best Buy, thinking of a car mount or speaker dock for the iPhone 4. Did the stupid thing and asked if they had any iPad 2's in stock. They did, I succumbed.

Never ask, it's the slippery slope to spend, spend, spend. Let us iPad 1 people know what we are missing.

Thank you so much for the detailed "solution". I will pass these on to my sister and make sure that she has everything on her new iPad2 before I take possession of her "old" iPad. This is one hand-me-down I am looking forward to!
