Faster DVD to iPad 3 Conversion by 6 times? Optimized format for ripping

Same with iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, the new iPad 3 will play back videos encoded using either the MPEG-4 or H.264 codecs. This does not represent the video standard that is used by most video recording devices, TV recording devices, or commercial DVDs. Hence there are so many iPad Video Converters and DVD Rippers for you to encoded videos and DVDs to MPEG-4 and H.264. Encoding is usually a major, time-consuming event that occupied a great deal of time. Generally speaking, ripping a 100mins’ DVD to iPad 3 optimized 720p HD mp4 can take up 2-8 hours based on the computer you use. The higher quality you get, the longer it takes.

    Choose iPad-ready format: MPEG-4 vs. H.264
MPEG-4 has historically been very good in this regard to begin with, and the H.264 codec has only improved on the quality and file size efficiency. Content on the iTunes Store uses the H.264 codec exclusively. Content you encode yourself can be encoded into either H.264 or MPEG-4, H.264 generally provides better quality for a given file-size, but it takes longer to encode.

Fasten DVD to iPad ripping process: Bitrate and Encoder
Two other important considerations with video playback and the quality of the resulting file are the resolution and the bitrate. Resolution refers to the dimension of the screen image, in terms of the number of pixels wide by the number of pixels high. Want to watch movies on iPad 3/iPad 2 in full screen? Better set resolution to 1920x1080.

Bitrate refers to the amount of data that is actually encoded to make up a single second of video playback. The higher bitrate you set, the higher quality you get, the longer time you spend in DVD to iPad 3 video conversion. Here’s a testing example with Pavtube DVD Ripper.

DVD to iPad 3 Video Rip Test 1
    Source: DVD Appllo, 140min
Output Format: iPad 3 (New iPad) Full HD Video(*.mp4)
    Video Resolution: 1920x1080
    Default Bitrate: 5000kbps
    Output File Size: 5GB
Conversion Time: 7 hrs and 12mins
The whole DVD to iPad 3 ripping process took more than 7hrs on a Dual-Core 2.6Ghz Windows desktop.

DVD to iPad 3 Video Rip Test 2
    Source: DVD Appllo, 140min
Output Format: iPad 3 (New iPad) Full HD Video(*.mp4)
    Video Resolution: 1920x1080
    Custom Bitrate: 2500kbps
    Output File Size: 2.57GB
Conversion Time: 3 hrs and 40mins
This time the same DVD is ripped on the same computer with half of the default bitrate, the DVD to iPad 3 ripping process is shortened to about 3.6 hrs – half time is saved.

How to custom bitrate on Pavtube DVD Ripper: there’s a Settings button on the interface, click the button and select desired value from the drop-down list of video Bitrate.

But this is not the end of the story. To further improve the ripping speed, I took advantage of GPU encoding on top of the 2nd test. This time I turn the GPU encoder on.
DVD to iPad 3 Video Rip Test 3
    Source: DVD Appllo, 140min
Output Format: iPad 3 (New iPad) Full HD Video(*.mp4)
    Video Resolution: 1920x1080
    Custom Bitrate: 2500kbps
    Output File Size: 2.53GB
Conversion Time: 1 hrs and 22mins

By activating the Nvidia CUDA acceleration the DVD to iPad 3 video conversion process is further reduced to less than 1.5 hrs. Isn’t it amazing? How could GPU encoding affect encoding process so much? Let’s say THANKS to Nvidia and AMD, for developing the GPU encoding tech.

How to activate GPU encoding on Pavtube DVD Ripper: just one click on the CUDA/AMD encoding button.

Note: GPU encoding is available only to those who have Nvidia CUDA or AMD APP ready graphics card on their computers. Check if your graphics card support GPU acceleration. And CPU encoding is restricted to H.264 codec.

Why Pavtube DVD Ripper is the best choice for iPad fans to en-decode DVD movies to iPad Video: Pavtube Studio provides the world's fastest GPU-accelerated video encoders running on Windows PC. For a better video conversion experience, the iPad Video Converter and DVD to iPad Converter have been upgraded with NVIDIA CUDA technology and AMD APP technology (upgraded from ATI). Now with the latest version iPad DVD ripper you can crack/rip DVD movies to iPad 720p HD video, iPad H.264 encoded .mp4 video with 2-5 times faster than ever.
