The evolution of food is interesting, and things that emerge from necessity can catch on surprisingly well. Look at Spam and Bovril, for instance. What was wartime food because of perishability is still consumed widely today, even though many other better options are available now.

And reading about food in the past is sometimes a treat. I'm especially fond of Laura Ingalls Wilder's description of savoring an orange segment by segment, a rare edible in her childhood, or scenes from Edith Wharton's Age of Innocence, when menus were dictated by wealth and social expectations.

Talking about muffins...Muffin the Mule is the first regular puppet TV show I remember watching.

Our family bought its' first TV just before the coronation of our Abseiling Queen, just like the rest of the Brits. It was the only one in our street then so everyone ended up in our house, mesmerised by the TINY square grey screen, all day long, afraid to miss any tiny thing.

I have memories of our "drawing room" completely crammed, curtains drawn tight to keep out any light (we had to watch in the dark then or we couldn't see anything), people craning round each other's heads, very hot & stuffy, dutifully handing out my mother's idea of coronation-themed eats & drinks (!) & an aunt fainting...

But after that came Muffin!!! All we kids adored him. And his friendly singer Annette Scott & Ann Hogarth who "pulled the strings". Brings a tear to watch him again, even now:-)
