Also called "pikelets" in the Midlands. Nothing like "Scotch pancakes" which are smaller and not thick & straight-sided. These two are supermarket frauds which look and feel like big, white & pasty, round, holey erasers...but once well-toasted & hot, the top gets hard & crunchy & the bottom is smooth; those holes hold the butter very neatly...they do leak a bit from the bottom but only if you're very slow!!!
Bit iffy about the maple syrup but suppose you could be excused that abhorrence.
