Looks like a mixture of sand and calcium chloride (road salt) applied to snow. The grit helps with traction and the salt with melting. Although I'm not 100% there's salt in that mixture. When I lived in Alberta in the 70's and 80's salt wasn't used on the roads. Not certain if Saskatchewan's the same.

Correct, Admiral, it's a salt and sand mixture applied to the roads near intersections to help with traction in snowy conditions. The main purpose of the salt is to stop the sand piles from freezing solid in winter, not to melt the snow on the roads. I've lived in Halifax during the winter and they use salt on the roads like you wouldn't believe.Originally Posted by AdmiralAdama
