As there has been no activity on this thread for over two hours, I am taking advantage of the inactivity clause in the rules to post this challenge.

What is this? How and when was it used?

Is it a Bathysphere? Designed by American engineer Otis Barton. He and naturalist William Beebe used it in the 1930s and 40s to study undersea life.
A first. Their deepest dive 923 meters, August 15, 1934. Barton broke that record solo, in 1949.

Is it a Soviet era manned space capsule, on display at the Henry Crown Space Center,
Chicago Museum of Science and Industry?

If correct, the challenge is open. I'm off to space myself.

Hmm, without taking time to check my guess with research:

This looks like one of the cabin for one of the around the word (non-stop) attempt by balloon. The combination of altitude and cold required an enclosed control cabin. Wasn't it the CEO of Virgin who attempted this, more than once. Can't remember his name off the top of my head.

It was suspended from a balloon, in the spring of 1931. It set a record.

Capsule used by Swiss scientist Auguste Piccard to achieve a manned flight to the stratosphere, lifted by a hydrogen balloon. He reached a height of 51,793 feet, setting a new altitude record.
