What is this? What is it normally used for?

Looks like a key lock power switch. Functions the same way as a regular wall switch except you
need to insert a key in the slot to open and close the circuit.

It just looks like a slot,there's no hole here.
It operates when something moves past it. This one is at my workplace.

I use it twice a day.

It's a scanner,but not for transit passes. What it scans is firmly attached to the body.

It scans something unique to each individual.

Earlier I received a PM from an iPF member who suggested it's a "thumbprint" scanner.

I've seen and used many kinds of print scanners but never one that looks like your image.

It is a fingerprint scanner. It's used to sign in and out at work.The second photo is the scanner on my laptop.
