It looks like one of those covers for the head of a microphone,used to cut out wind noise.

It could be used during recording to listen to a pre-recorded track while speaking or singing to record a new track.the two tracks could be combined during post production mixing sessions.

It could be. In this case the microphone is tuned for voice input for over-the-air presentation on AM & FM radio.
