I'd think that a tech journo would have no choice but to go for work, lol.

I got free passes from an exhibitor.

I am a journalist and I have colleagues who do pass. Normally I apply for accreditation to events I know I will cover but also apply for a few on spec. It also depends who's dime I'm traveling on.

I know journos, but they go to work events for work only. From what I understand, their companies are strict about keeping work and fun separate, so if you go, you're expected to cover something, not just hang about.

That is correct. If a staff writer / reporter is assigned then it's all work and no or little play. No time for it either since you're constantly updating social media during preparation of the feature material. If you're freelancing it's less restrictive because you're paid for what you produce.

Three - four times a year I pay my way to events that interest me professionally but I have no interest in covering for work.

It doesn't look that bad on the picture. But I just heard that the roads leading to my village are closed.

Beautiful pics of all that snow, J.A.! Sorry to hear though that the conditions are becoming worse. Hope your kids arrive safely from Viena!

I'm expecting both my children to come home from Vienna. But the conditions are very bad. I suspect they won't be able to drive home.
I hope that the roads into your village will be open by the time your children get there, and that their trip will not have been too traumatic.

Just think....if 300,000 of us had shown up for the Kaiserschmarren, our body heat alone would have taken care of the snow.
