    Yikes, something like this could end terribly. Years ago, an exchange student in a Halloween costume knocked on the wrong door (in Louisiana, I think it was) and ended up fatally shot. This story reminded me of that case and made me cringe.

    Always a risk I suppose. Canada is a lightly armed nation so the chances of being murdered while mummering are slight.

    Yes, probably safer to try in countries that aren't as well armed.

    Jews also traditionally masquerade and make visits for Purim. Wonder whether mummering might have similar roots.

    There is linkage. Mummering has been around since pre Christian times. Since the Middle Ages various cultures have adopted the practice, putting their own spin on it.
    Mummering has been practiced in Newfoundland since the mid 1800's. There are references to it in texts about Purim and Carnival Fastnaucht spiel.
