I don't know about partitions I just bought a passport external hd and stuck photos on it. And as for disk utilities WAAAAAAAAA . I'm happy to use super duper I have heard of that one to. After the copy is made and Lion has installed it's self perfectly fingers crossed, can I then wipe the copy I made and make another bootable clone after the Lion installation. does that make sense ? I think I will delay the lion to see if anyone has any problems. I will have to study up on how to format and partition hds. this new upgrade gets more complicated by the minute. Might be easier to stay on snow leopard lol. You have helped a lot thanks 
You could delete the snow leopard clone after successful lion installation then make a clone of lion however.......I tend to keep the last clone I make of each OS and each mac.....the reason, sometimes software doesn't work properly with the new OS so I can just boot into my old one and I'm ready to go. At the moment I have an ext HD with various partitions containing bootable clones of my old mac mini running tiger, my MacBook running tiger and my MacBook running snow leopard......only the other week I had to boot back into tiger to run some web authoring software which wasnt stable on snow leopard.

Also, another added bonus, most of my friends have macs.....if they need help with something I can take my WD passport to their house, plug into their mac and boot from any of my iterations of OSX......it's brilliant! In the old days I had to take my mac and fire up in target disc mode.

Can you partition after you have done a clone. I formated a new drive and did a clone of SL but didn't partition the drive first.

Thanks Gabriel1 I can see this bootable copy is going to be a nice safety thing to have. I have started looking for step by step instructions and E How has some using super duper, so when I get it all sorted in my head I will attempt . I can see it's something really worth learning how to do. Watch this space I will post when I have succeeded 

Like most things it really is a lot easier than it originally sounds, super duper is super easy to run........but if you run into any problems then please let me know and I'll try to guide you through the process.

Good spot, especially the note at the bottom to copy the installer before installing as it self deletes!

Woooohoooo I have done it !! Made my bootable copy of snow leopard HD. I used super duper but first I formatted my ext hd into two partitions the first one was in that GUID that's where I put snow leopard clone and the second one I was not sure what type of format to do so used the Apple partition map for that, hope that was right. I can tell you I was scared ridged in case something went wrong. Then I tested the bootable copy and started up from it. Another tense moment sweat was breaking. But it worked PHEWWW. Now can I just use the second partition to store copies of iphoto folder and music I buy ? The next big step is to download Lion I'm now stressed about that should I wait a bit longer has there been some hiccups ? This has been an all new experience for me thank you and Poser for the help.

Yes, use the other partition for whatever you want.

You are good to go to download Lion, if you do have any hiccups then you can always boot back into snow leopard.

Sounds like you are a power user now......we'll be looking to you for help from now on!

You may want to join the Apple Mac forum which is affiliated with this one at appleforums.net where many have lion running already and can help with any issues.
