This Question popped up on a Somerset forum. So lets pose it here.

Has anyone heard of a Somerset Rug? If so, what is it?

Yes, I do have the answer and it came from a most unusual source!

I do know what scrumpy cider looks like but I don't like the taste. I'm more a wine buff.

You are right Hayles it is a rag rug.

The source which held a description was on the Australian Newspapers "Trove" site.

I've seen those rugs from time to time.

This was one story on the list...

I remember my grandmother making these rugs also, but, this was in Newcastle upon Tyne, she used to cut all our old clothes into strips which she then fed in and out of hessian using a hook, the hessian was stretched very tightly in a frame, rather like a tapestry frame but much, much bigger, the poles must have been over 6ft long.? Sometimes she would just do lines, but more often she would do shapes sometimes surrounded by a darker line, they always looked really nice and considering that they were made out of old well worn material they lasted for years.

When she moved to her bungalow in Somerset she decided that she was too old to make any more rugs so she used the poles to edge a flower bed, I've often wondered what the new owners made of these strange poles and if they puzzled over what they were used for!

    Margaret.

Yay. What a fantastic guess of mine? I've probably seen loads of these and never realised what they were.

Hubby was telling me that a few well known people have been married right here in Somerset and also just down the road from us in Sherborne Abbey. Melanie Sykes(Boddington ad girl) a couple of weeks ago and this weekend, one of the Tizzard family. They are big in the horse racing fraternity. My daughter saw that wedding while assisting hubby at Sherborne market. Katie Price married some youngster a few weeks ago near Western-Super-Mare. Not such a big fan of hers, I must say.

I'm sure there are more but I don't read all the popular fashion magazines, having no real interest in most of them. Mainly reality TV people nowadays.

Anyone in the UK planning on going to one of the open air films this summer at Somerset House in London http://www.somersethouse.org.uk/film...er-screen-2013

I'm thinking about it as it looks great but with our hit-and-miss weather it could be a big mistake!

They have held it over recent years in the summer, I actually like the idea of going to see one of the old classics on a warm summers night with a picnic hamper full of popcorn and champagne!!
