MAC Defender is a new fake antivirus that the Mac might get. Kim Komando's newsletter is where I read about this. She also has a website and radio show. I did not check out the Mac free real antivirus programs she recommended.

I love Kim! All the time I listened to her, I thought she was a man. Seriously. Doesn't she sound like one?

Then I went to her website and saw her!

No, that is a myth. iPad's on the other hand don't get viruses

Btw. if you were asking, whether anti-virus software is required, I spent ages searching for a free av program, coming from the Windows world thinking, there must be one, but ended up buying Norton. As the only free one was ClamXAV, an opensource av software and well, not too reliable. Though that was last year, perhaps some other options have appeared since than.
I use Sophos Mac Home Edition which is free and works quite well. As far as I know there has never been a serious virus affecting the OS X platform, but there are vulnerabilities in OS X that are waiting to be exploited. I don't worry as much about getting infected when using a Mac but I still have protection just in case.
So there are anti-virus protectors for the Mac? Should she get one or will one come with it?

i didn't get any anti-virus software with mine. She can just download the free version from Sophos or perhaps purchase a paid version on the Mac App Store if so preferred.

Been running without one for over 4 years and I am not worried. Until apples market share reaches more, then it wont be an issue.

It's about education, where not to go, what bad things look like.

Nothing can be installed without your password. Anytime you try and install a new program or even update the OS, it asks you. So if you are using trustworthy software and getting your updates from where you are supposed to, you will be fine.
