I suppose I don't like it when the tiny little old lady reaching into the meat counter, falls in and after I help her back on her feet, she swings her handbag at me. Not so much as a thank you !

Maybe she didn't want help? I know my great-grandfather would be annoyed by people who tried to help him -- he felt he could do stuff himself, and people were assuming he needed help with walking, etc. It might be a point of pride as we all age and want to remain independent. When we're in good shape, we might appreciate help because there's no emotional baggage tied to it? Or maybe she was just a jerk? Lol.
