Where in the World is back.

Where in the World is a geographical game for iPF members. The concept is simple. One member posts a picture with a request for information such as location, significance and name and the rest of us have to try to work out the answer(s) from the clues given. Whoever gives the first complete answer sets the next challenge. The poster of the challenge confirms that the challenge has been met.

The game has two threads. The first is for the game itself. Posts are limited to those asking questions, answering them or asking for further clues. The second is a discussion thread where any other questions or comments about a challenge may be posted.

All usual iPF rules apply. Additionally, there are certain other requirements for participation. Photographs used must be either the posters own work, or a plain text credit to the owner of the photograph must be given. Links are not allowed. Photographs must be clear, but may be cropped or otherwise manipulated to remove details which would give away the challenge.

Anyone posting a challenge should be aware that monitoring the thread is crucial to gameplay. If you cannot monitor, please don't set a challenge. If several hours have passed, and you need to go offline, please ask one of the following moderators to monitor the challenge on your behalf: KevinJS, Scifan57 or Admiral Adama. You may pass over setting the challenge and throw it open to anyone who wants to set one. If more than one challenge is posted, the first will be deemed to be the current one, and any others will be deleted.

Any method is acceptable to find the answer. Last time we played this game, we discovered Google Goggles, which can identify many photographs quite quickly. You may get some information this way. You may not get everything that the question asks for. Copying and pasting answers, while allowed, must be credited to the author, again with a plain text credit.

What is the present name of this ship? Where was it built, and why did change ownership in 1945?

I saw this ship moored at Larne, in Northern Ireland several years ago. Unfortunately, my own photographs of it have been lost.

It's the STS Sedov, built in Kiel, Germany by Friedrich Krupp Germaniawerft. Formerly the Magdalene Vinnen II, from 1921-1936, then the Kommodore Johnsen from 1936- 1948, she was handed over to the Soviet Union on December 20, 1945, as war reparations.
