Seeing SciFan's pic of the keystone from the Alamo (which I've probably viewed a half dozen times over the years) reminded me of my first trip to Mexico w/ my wife back in spring 1972 - two weeks starting on the island of Cozumel, then to Merida on the Yucatan Peninsula, and finally to Mexico City - we did plenty of side trips to the pre-Columbian ruins of the Mayans (Chichen Itza & Uxmal) on the peninsula & to Teotihuacan north of Mexico City.

Just a handful of scanned slides (from my recent project) from the trip showing the impressive Mayan ruins, the architecture, & the spectacular stone work; plus, my young wife 40 years ago - Dave

Hi Squib - had to change the date on my post, i.e. the trip was in 1972, so Cancun (near Isla Mujeres) was just being developed, so not a possible stop for us then; BUT, I've been to Mexico 7 or 8 times and all for medical meetings except for that first trip; meetings that I attended several times over in each place included Cancun, Acapulco, and Puerto Vallarta- wife usually was along and we took time off to tour in all of those places, including a day trip to Isla Mujeres while on a trip to Cancun. BTW, just gorgeous beaches along that Yucatan Peninsula and those close islands. Dave

i was lucky enough to visit austria a number of years ago. it IS a magical place. not very many places i'd like to visit more than once, but given the opportunity i'd go back there in a new york minute. spectacular beyond words.

Hi Squib - I grew up in southeastern Michigan near Toledo, Ohio (where I was born) - went to school for 7 years in Ann Arbor (met my future wife there in 1968) - we took several trips to the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and have seen the St. Joseph Lighthouse (near Benton Harbor) but in much more favorable weather - the Sand Dunes on that lakeshore are amazing.

NOW, going up that shore of the lake toward Charlevoix, a ferry ride will take you to Beaver Island, where my 100% Irish grandmother (father's side) was born in the late 1880s - grew up in basically an Irish community - she cared for us in Toledo (first 12 years of my life) and use to swear in Gaelic - BOY, it would have been interesting to be on that island in the 1890s - was a hard life, though - thanks for bringing back some memories (BTW - I've been to the island twice in my teens - my cousin on my father's side is there now looking into 'our history') - Dave

You are very lucky and also welcome! I lived on Isla Mujere's for a month before Cancun existed! Will try to scan some of those old photo's in so you guys can see for yourselves how wonderful it was! All roads were white sand except for the (approx) N-S one.
