    Aging newbie

I'm a 64-year-old retired newspaper editor and reporter, but I've been coerced into being the IT guy for my wife's high-tech consulting company. I'm hanging on by my fingernails...
I love the iPad 4, so much so that I bought one but then gave it to my son and bought another for myself.
A problem I'm having is that both iPads think I'm their daddy, and every change I make takes effect on my son's iPad as well as mine. That drives him crazy.
I'd like to know what settings I have to change (I'm guessing more than one) to separate the umbilical cord to my son's iPad.
In the meantime, I'm glad to be here. Hello, everybody!

The iPad you gifted your son will have to be wiped so that he can register the device in his name, with a unique Apple ID.

Do you know how to wipe an iOS device?

No, I don't. I'm very new to these devices.

    Time to learn then.

Here's a video walk-thru of the process, courtesy of CNET.

I'm certain this will help and give you and your son the device independence you want.

Thank you! That video looks like just the thing. We'll restore my son's iPad this morning and it looks like we'll be good then.

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

I agree with the Admirals suggestion of separate accounts but I just thought I would mention this. It is possible to run multiple devices on the same Apple ID, each device just needs to be given its own name and ITunes will recognise the different devices, each can have their own apps, music etc and be independent of each other. The advantage here is that any Apps purchased can be shared between your son and yourself, otherwise you will need to pay for these apps twice under individual accounts. Your son would also have access to this account if he has the password.... food for thought. . But you never know, your wife may end up getting her own ipad and then this info may come in handy. The choice is yours.

Thank you very much. I think that in our case separate accounts is probably the best idea, but I'm pleased to have a choice. I certainly do feel welcome here, by the way. Everyone has been helpful and friendly--I feel like I should buy the next round!
