I don't know how it happened, but my son was using the iPad for his assignment and after use, he dropped it on my table. Now I discovered the Safari icon is missing from the iPad. What do I do and how can I restore it?

One of two things.
Either he set Restrictions. You may need to ask him if he remembers setting a password, and what that password is,
Or (hopefully) he dragged it into a folder, in which case Settings/General/Reset/Reset Home Screen Layout will bring it out of hiding.
One thing he did not do is delete it, since its a native app and cannot be deleted.

The first thing to do is check all pages to be sure he didn't just move it to another page.
I made my icon disappear by enabling restrictions and turning safari off. When I turned it on again the icon had been moved to another page. I do hope your son didn't play with the restrictions.
You can find safari with spotlight search, but that is not the best solution.
And don't forget trying the "soft reset" by holding home and the sleep buttons, ignoring "slide to turn off", until it restarts. I hope you've found the solution that worked out for you.
