    Problem with FaceTime.

Hi Everyone, I've been using iPad for six months now and love it. Recently though it has refused to let me sign in to FaceTime and iMessage. The error message is : Could not sign in. Please check your network connection. I know I have network connection since I can use Safari. I know I've got the right Apple ID and password because I can open my Apple ID account through the Internet. I have read other forums where changing the DNS settings to google's; and checking the time on the clock is recommended, but no change! Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

Try closing your apps completely and then relaunching them. From the home screen do the four finger swipe up or double press the home button to reveal your multi task bar. These are all the apps that you have opened at one time. Long press the app until it jiggles and a red minus sign will appear above it. Press the minus sign, this will close the app, not delete it, now press the home button to return to your screen. It's also a good idea to close all these apps, as it helps the iPad run smoothly, check to see if it is now working, if not the next 2 steps are a restart and/or reset.

Restart - Press and hold the power off button, the one at the top right. You will see a slide appear to power off, slide this and the screen will go dark and a Whirly will appear. When the Whirly disappears your iPad is now off. Press the power button again until the Apple logo appears, this will take a few seconds and your iPad will restart. You should restart your iPad occasionally also as it will keep it running well. Now see if it is operating.

Reset - Hold the power off button and the home button simultaneously, keep holding them in and you will see the power off slide appear and disappear, wait until you see the Apple logo appear before releasing the buttons. It will take a little longer for your iPad to start. Let us know how you go.

Thanks very much for your reply... I have tried closing the apps and restarting the iPad, to no avail... I am nervous of the reset : will I lose any data? Sorry, it my iPhone was once 'restored' in a phone shop and I lost everything, including photos! Just re-assure me that reset is safe from this point of view. Thanks again.

The reset I'm talking about here will not change anything on your iPad and is nothing like a restore, it is very much like rebooting a pc and is a totally safe step to do.

There is a lot to read in those links so I hope you're nice and comfy.

Now to your problem, have you set any Restrictions on your iPad at all? I have heard of the DNS setting fix as I recently helped someone else with a problem with FaceTime and iMessage and that's what solved their issue. I'll just include a link to a thread on this so you can see if this is what you tried.

Have you recently set up a firewall at all? Have a look at this link which has troubleshooting tips on internet connections which may help.

Another thought is turning these apps off and on and reinput your info, same goes for your Internet settings, once everything is off or deleted, do a restart and then do a fresh input.

Let us know how you go.

Hello again, I've done a lot of reading... Tried all the fixes suggested in the threads, no change. My local apple dealer, the shop in the mall, not Apple itself but an agent, recommends a restore... They suggest backing everything up to iCloud, and through iTunes, and for good measure, saving valuable photos or documents to Dropbox; and then with a deep breath (!) restoring the iPad... They say that this will re-install all the software and is the only enduring fix they know. What d'you reckon? Thanks again for your time and care. JR

Yes I'm afraid to say he is right here although you could try this first, go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset all Settings. Then reinput your settings and hope for the best, but if that doesn't work a restore is what you will need to do as I can't think of anything else for you to try here.

Here are some links to help you. Good luck!
