Can you change either the criteria of what shows up on the search page or can you delete what comes up. Eg my hotmail account although emails deleted if you type a contact name on the search page although hotmail not open and all emails deleted they still show up in search

I've not heard of a way to do what you want but you can take email out of the spotlight search altogether.
Go to Settings - General - Spotlight search and untick Mail. I hope this helps
