What leads you to believe it isn't working? Failure to launch? Hanging upon launch? Crashing after launch? What, if any, specific errors are you seeing?
Background apps are hiding for good reason. Seek them out, close them. The world will be a better place.

As Midranger has alluded to, we need more info on what is happening here. First thing to my mind is have you the latest version of iTunes downloaded?

Have you tried uninstalling everything that has to do with Apple and iTunes. I had an issue a few months ago and the only thing that worked was uninstalling everything such as iTunes, Bonjour, Quicktime, etc. Seemed to do the trick and found out that this is not uncommon.
