    Settings -> General -> Auto-Lock.

    Hi gene..please do not double post the same message. This makes it very hard for members to follow the conversation as well as offer any help. This is also against the rules.

    I have deleted your other post at this time.

    Hi Gene--

    Have you followed this:

    iPad Cover Lock/Unlock
    You can automatically lock or unlock iPad 2 when you use it with the iPad Smart Cover (available separately).

    Use the cover to lock or unlock iPad: Choose General > iPad Cover Lock/Unlock, then tap On. iPad automatically locks and goes to sleep when you close the cover, and then wakes and unlocks when you open the cover.
    If you have a passcode set, you have to enter it when you open the cover to wake iPad.

    I would do a reset on your iPad to get this working again. Hold the power off button and the home button simultaneously, keep holding them in and you will see the power off slide appear and disappear, wait until you see the Apple logo appear before releasing the buttons. It will take a little longer for your iPad to start. You won't lose anything by doing this it's just like rebooting a computer. Let us know how you go.

    Thanks but the reset apparently did not work either. I followed your steps precisely, and when I reopen the cover the ipad looks as if it did not shut down at all. Very strange. I appreciate your help.
