How often synched before?
If it is the first time (or you recently added lots of mosic/videos/movies) it will take some time to convert the files...

Stay put, it is worth doing it

If you have a WiFi network at home you can also sync wirelessly (i.e. during night) when iPad is connected to power supply and computer is on... - (meanwhile I never sync manually anymore)
