Could anyone please tell me if I can send several photos from my library by email at the same time as I only seem able to send one at at a time and it shows in the mail as a photo and not as an attachment ?

You can send from within the photos app up to 5 photos per email: in the thumbnail-view select up to 5 photos, press the button upper right corner, then the send button.
The emails contain the photos as an attachment, but they are displayed inside the email. Send yourself an email with a photo and open it on a computer, you will see how it will arrive.
