Is it possible to connect the two for game purposes? I want to play Words with Friends on an upcoming flight. please help?

No this can't be done, the iPad Bluetooth can only pair with headphones or bluetooth keyboard.

iPad and iPhone CAN be connected via Bluetooth, through the GameKit API, however Words with Friends does not use this feature.

If you search the App Store for Bluetooth game you will find some programs that will connect between two Bluetooth devices.

On an side note however, most airlines will not allow you to use Bluetooth in flight.
