Backup and installing new op system

I have an iPad 1 and up to now have had no difficulty in initialling the various upgrades there have been.

Trying ti install OS5, however I am thwarted by a message which says I have a lack of disk space. I get the same message whether I am using my PC or a laptop. On the latter I have tried removing all data files and all programmed on the PC apart from Office and iTunes. I have also emptied the recycle bin. Now the laptop is coming up with a low disk space warning even before the iPad is connected.

Ought I to try the rest to factory settings option and if so, am I likely to be able to retrieve my apps?

Is your low disk space on the iPad or the computers? Because if it's on the computers, nothing you do with/on the iPad will help. You'll have to remove stuff off the computers.

If it's on the iPad, just remove some apps, songs or movies (some, none or all). Then, after getting the update, you can just put everything back on after the update.

Just take them off before doing a backup (that you really want to do before any update, anyway. That way, you can restore with the backup and not try to "over stuff" the iPad again.

By the way, installing a new software version essentially puts the iPad into a like-new, fresh out of the box state. If you didn't use a backup to restore, it would be as if you just got it from the store - as in, completely empty and not full.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks, , Marilyn

It's the computer and lap top disks that are said to be full. But given the way I have stripped everything off the lap top that seemed unlikely.

Would cleaning up your disk space ie, deleting cookies, history etc and defragging your laptop make a difference?
