I use the Apple 'Office' apps - 'Pages' - Word compatible, 'Numbers' - Excel compatible and 'Keynote' - PowerPoint compatible. You can import documents (even Office 2007 & 2010 format). You can read about their capabilities on the Apple website

They cope reasonably well with most of Office formatting, but complex docs cause it to struggle. PDF export is supported too. A Bluetooth keyboard is great if you're going to be doing a lot of typing. I use the iGO folding keyboard, it's compact and works just fine with the iPad.
