Calendar for monthly meeting
I am a member of a book club that has met monthly for 25 years. I would like to
set up a calendar which contains the date of all past and future meetings, the
venue, the title of the book, the author and one or two other items. I would
like to be able to view this information both (a) in the calendar entry and (b)
as a table. I would really like to be able to enter this information only once
(currently I enter it into calendar, but I can't view it as a table, so I also
keep a spreadsheet, which does not seem efficient). Finally, I would like to
share it with the other members of the club, but I imagine that this is fairly
straightforward once it has been set up.

For maximum share-ability I recommend you set you calendar up in Google Calendars. iCloud calendars can only be shared with other iCloud users.
I recommend you create a new calendar to share, rather than using the default primary calendar in your Google account. It will be easier down the road.
Once you have a Google account, and have created the basic calendar, it is possible to sync a Google calendar with the iPad's native Calendar app. You go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account, choose GMail, then enter you account username and password. If you don't want to use the Mail or Notes syncing options, just turn them off. To sync more than the primary calendar visti and enable it at this site. https://www.google.com/calendar/iphoneselect
However; since the Calendar app does not have the table view you want, you should look at the many third party apps and see what they offer. Most of them will also sync with Google calendars. I'm not all that familiar with the features of these apps, and I'm not completely sure what you mean by a table view; so I can't help beyond that.
Google's calendar on the web has an Agenda view that also work in Safari on the iPad, if that's anything like what you wanted.
