Greetings and welcome to the iPad Forums.
Do you mean that you are using a first generation iPad?
Some of the apps will shut off or close and take you back to the home screen because there is not enough memory to run the app. This is usually because you may have too many apps running in the background. You can double click the home button, or swipe with four fingers upward. This will slide the screen upward and reveal an area that shows the icons of the recently used programs. They aren't really closed and are still taking up some memory. If you touch and hold one of the app icons until the start to wiggle there will be a circle with a minus symbol on the upper left corner. Touching the minus symbol will close the app, but not erase it from the iPad. This will free up memory. This is only for the apps in the lower part of the screen.
Right now I only have one other app running in the background on my iPad. I was using it for research before I dropped by here.
If closing all of the other apps doesn't seem to help when you try running Facebook and look at pictures then you can try closing all of the apps running in the background and restarting the iPad. Either turn it off and restart it, or hold the power and home buttons until it turns off and the Apple logo appears and the iPad restarts.
Let me know how it goes.

Hi and thanks for the advice.... I had tried doing what you suggested recently but I still get the drop out issue, also with other programmes not just Facebook. Perhaps this is someones way of telling me I need to upgrade
